Shoe Change Parade

So the old running shoes finally gave way today while doing the 2.4km – I’d bought them in 2005 (I think), so they’ve had a pretty good run (hrr hrr so punny). It’s somewhat disconcerting since these were the running shoes I’d brought with me to York and back, and it’s kind of sad that they’re going to be sent on an ignominious final journey down the rubbish chute a glorious journey to Sugarcandy Mountain.

I’ve never really been a big fan of running (and would probably not do so at all if not for fitness test requirements), but I did rather enjoy doing it in the UK. Partially it was the cool, dry weather; but more importantly, it was the feeling of freedom granted by navigating the large expanses in my own time – the feeling that I was running just because I could, that there wasn’t a whole backlog of work waiting for me to clear once I was done.

Not a feeling I get when running these days, unfortunately.

So while a replacement is already on its way, there’s a certain element of nostalgia associated with this ratty pair of shoes that is not so easily replaced.

(Or maybe it will be, being a superior model from Asics. Say what you want about Singapore’s National Service system, but I do rather enjoy some of the freebies you get.)
